"With Y'all I'thousand Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 move picture Fast Intermission. It was performed by Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited every bit Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number two on the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland singles nautical chart.[3]
History [edit]
The music from Fast Pause was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to iv of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written well-nigh of the lyrics to 'With Yous I'm Born Once more' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't notice two words and it was driving me crazy."[iv] The right words came to her on her way to an ice foam parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her society. "I had finally found information technology—the line I was seeking--'Come testify me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[4]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston's partner for the two duets that had been written for the film,[5] and each singer too had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album every bit well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally not very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their ain thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[4] The reluctant pair were surprised past the success of "With You lot I'yard Born Again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of information technology existence a hit single."[vi]
Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he's a star.'" Connors also shared, "The belatedly swell Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he first heard the song on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cut past the scissors. True story."[4]
Simply radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Break soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco still permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo'southward recordings from the album, the trip the light fantastic tune "Go for It", was chosen as the single that would be issued to promote the anthology. That selection barely made a paring in the charts, spending 1 calendar week on the Disco singles chart at number 80 in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one calendar week at number 108.[ii]
The film did not get much attending, either, and Preston described their next endeavour to give "With Yous I'm Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "after the film didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled information technology off that album and put it on mine."[six] Preston'southward album, Late at Dark, came out later in 1979, but even with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "we still didn't think of it as a single."[six] It did, even so, begin to get airplay in the European market[6] and was finally released as a single at the end of the year.
Another hurdle the vocal had to overcome was the fact that its title did non click with some record buyers. "Connors says her only regret about 'With You I'chiliad Born Over again' is that she didn't title information technology 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to allow me know we had a monster hit on our hands just that early on many people were going into record stores request for "Come up Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost as a issue.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "built-in again" is often associated with Christianity may have besides been disruptive, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, just Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'southward the way we felt about i another. Culp was the inspiration."[iv] The singers also felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context as well as being a romantic love song. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Break, nosotros understood it was a romantic song. Only I think of it every bit religious because God is love, then information technology all inter-relates."[6] This religious attribute would later be played up by the show Glee in the season two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Drupe (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed as a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.
Chart success [edit]
"With Y'all I'grand Born Again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the event of the magazine dated December eight, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[ii] The following week marked its first appearance on the UK singles chart[8] and on Billboard'south list of the fifty most popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.South., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number two showing.[ix] [three] It also started three weeks on the magazine'due south Hot Soul Singles chart in the January xix, 1980, event and got as high every bit number 86.[10] It was Preston's biggest hit in 5 years and the biggest pop hit of Wright'southward career.
