Dell - Inspiron 2-in-1 156 Touch-screen Laptop Review
Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1
MSRP $i,000.00
"The Dell Inspiron xiv two-in-1 is a good laptop with a less-than-good display."
Pros
- Excellent operation
- Unassumingly attractive
- Mostly solid build quality
- Good keyboard and mouse
- Strong battery life
Cons
- Display is junior
- Too expensive given the display
- Disappointing audio
The 14-inch laptop is an increasingly popular size. It offers a larger display than 13-inch laptops, but a much smaller chassis than fifteen-inch machines. It'due south also gaining popularity among convertible 2-in-1s, again offering more screen real estate for things similar digital inking while existence far less cumbersome than xv-inch two-in-1s. Dell gets that, and its newest Inspiron 14 two-in-1 fits right in.
I reviewed the Inspiron fourteen 2-in-1 with an AMD Ryzen seven 5700U CPU and a sixteen:9 Full Hard disk drive brandish. It carries a $ane,000 price tag, which is non budget by whatever means –it actually borders on premium territory. And while the 16GB of RAM and 512GB solid-land drive (SSD) sweeten things a bit, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 has a lot to live up to. While it performed well and had impressive bombardment life, its display holds information technology back — making its price a challenging hurdle.
Design
The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is constructed of a mix of aluminum in the lid and plastic in the chassis, and it manages its materials to requite it a mostly robust feel in hand. The lid flexes just a bit nether pressure level and there's some brandish distortion — never a adept thing — merely the keyboard deck and bottom chassis are solid. It's built well plenty for the cost, and considerably better than the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 that's about $300 less (with a lower-stop Ryzen v CPU and half the RAM). The $735 Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14 was just besides-built and thus proves that you don't take to spend $1,000 or more for solid build quality, while at the same time the $1,100 clamshell Acer Swift X had more than flexing in the hat and keyboard deck. Go figure. The Inspiron 14 2-in-1's hinge was stiff, requiring two hands to open, but information technology held the display firmly in its four positions — clamshell, tent, media, and tablet — and it props up the keyboard deck for a comfortable typing angle and actress airflow.
Aesthetically, the Inspiron 14 2-in-i comes in two colors in the AMD configuration, Pebble Greenish and Mist Blueish, and just Platinum Silver in its Intel incarnation. My review unit was Mist Blue, and that's a little deceiving — the laptop is actually 2-toned, with the Mist Blue covering the lid and a dark grey (or brown in some lighting) covering the bottom chassis. The brandish elevation and bottom and chassis front end and rear edges are rounded, merely the angles are simple, giving the laptop a minimalist advent that'due south attractive plenty without standing out. The display bezels aren't as small as I'd like along the meridian and lesser, but they're not overly huge and don't detract too much from a mod appearance. The Asus VivoBook Flip xiv and Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i are both similarly understated. The HP Spectre x360 fourteen stands out equally existence much more elaborately designed, but it's also considerably more expensive.
In terms of its size, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is thin enough at 0.64 to 0.71 inches depending on where you measure, and it's right in the ballpark for xiv-inch convertible 2-in-1s at three.43 pounds. The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 comes in at 0.72 inches and 3.31 pounds, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i is much thicker at 0.82 inches and well-nigh as heavy at 3.3 pounds. The Inspiron xiv 2-in-1 is a fiddling deeper than it could be, given the slightly large bezels, but it's a comfortable size overall. At that place's nothing to complain near here.
Connectivity is a mixed bag. There's a full-size HDMI port, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, and a USB-C 3.2 Gen i port along the left-hand side, and another USB-A three.2 Gen 1 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a microSD card reader forth the right-hand side. The problem with this configuration is that the laptop charges via USB-C (and given the AMD chipset, it doesn't support Thunderbolt 4), and with just one such port, you'll need a dongle of some kind to both power the machine and connect to USB-C devices. Legacy support is strong, though. The usual Wi-Fi half-dozen and Bluetooth 5.0 handle wireless duties.
Performance
AMD'southward Ryzen 5000 serial of CPUs continues to dominate confronting Intel'southward 11th-gen Core U-series processors, which is what y'all'll notice in thin and light laptops. The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 equips either the 6-cadre/12-thread Ryzen 5 5500U or the 8-core/sixteen-thread Ryzen 7 5700U, which is what powered my review unit. It's interesting that the Ryzen 5 version with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD is $200 less, making it an interesting alternative.
In that location are reasons to question the Inspiron 14 two-in-one'due south cost, but performance isn't i of them.
The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 performed well in our suite of benchmarks, coming in just behind the Ryzen 7 5800U and alee of the Ryzen 5 5500U. It was particularly potent in our Handbrake test that converts a 420MB video to H.265, finishing it in 116 seconds compared to the HP Pavilion Aero 13 with the speedier Ryzen 7 scrap that finished but 4 seconds faster. The Inspiron too did well in Cinebench R23, another CPU-intensive test, coming in backside the faster laptops, but not by much. PCMark ten Complete went as expected with a score of 5,411, and its Essentials, Productivity, and Content Creation scores were in line with the competition.
In that location'due south nothing to mutter about in terms of performance. The Inspiron fourteen 2-in-1 volition burn through your more than challenging productivity workflows, and information technology will fifty-fifty do well for a thin and light without a detached GPU in your creative tasks. At that place are reasons to question the Inspiron 14 2-in-one'southward price, merely performance isn't i of them.

| Acer Swift X(Ryzen vii 5800U) | 1287 / 6663 | 99 | 1437 / 10135 | 6247 | 4073 |

Gaming isn't the Inspiron xiv two-in-i's strength. Its Radeon Graphics scored simply ane,247 in the 3DMark Fourth dimension Spy test, slightly behind the Intel Iris Xe graphics in the HP Spectre x360 fourteen. It managed merely 27 frames per second (fps) in Fortnite at 1080p and high graphics, which is in line with the course but not an impressive functioning. You can play some games on the Inspiron 14 two-in-1, only exist fix to turn graphics mode down.
Display
There's a certain display standard that laptops should meet if they're going to price $ane,000 or more. That's particularly true with a laptop that has the operation chops to run across the entry-level needs of creative types — the display should be at least average in all respects.
While the Inspiron 14 2-in-1's display seemed OK during my testing, we don't do anything that needs a lot of color. Our review procedure is productivity-oriented unless nosotros're reviewing laptops with fifty-fifty faster CPUs and discrete GPUs that are aimed at creators. And then, although I thought the brightness was a piddling low and I disliked the one-time-school sixteen:9 aspect ratio (I dearest the trend toward taller sixteen:x and 3:two aspect ratios), I had no other major complaints.
The Inspiron 14 2-in-1's display was the most disappointing attribute of the machine.
However, my colorimeter wasn't impressed. First, effulgence was indeed low at merely 238 nits, well nether our preferred 300 nits that ensures a brandish will be bright plenty for all indoor conditions. The contrast was proficient at 1,090:i, exceeding our 1,000:one threshold for premium displays, merely the low brightness yet express how much black text popped against white backgrounds.
It'due south when I looked at the brandish'due south colors that I was disappointed. The console had narrow colors at simply 52% of AdobeRGB and 69% of sRGB, although they were fairly accurate at a DeltaE of 1.81 (less than i.0 is considered excellent). Premium laptops (or about-premium) tend to have 72% or college AdobeRGB and 95% or college sRGB. The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 and Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i had similarly poor colors and brightness, with less contrast, making them only a little worse than the Inspiron 14 2-in-i'due south. But again, they're besides considerably less money.
The Inspiron 14 two-in-1's display was the most disappointing attribute of the machine. Information technology'southward unfortunate that Dell didn't put in a better panel, because then it would really live up to its hope of an affordable auto for creatives to exercise their more lightweight work. Equally information technology is, it's just OK for bones productivity tasks, and even and so, you'll exist disappointed when viewing photos and videos.
The audio was loud enough at maximum volume, but there was considerable distortion — the most I've heard on a laptop in some time. Mids and highs were therefore broken up, and combined with the lack of bass, it made for an unpleasant experience. Headphones are a must for anything other than system sounds.
Keyboard and touchpad
The Inspiron fourteen 2-in-1's keyboard was broad and spacious, with large keycaps, attractive lettering, and usable three-step backlighting. The keys had plenty of travel and the switches provided a light, snappy feel. My but complaint is that they were maybe too light, making the bottoming action seem abrupt. Nonetheless, I'd rate it every bit a expert keyboard, if non in the same course every bit Dell's XPS or HP's Spectre lines.
The touchpad was large with a comfortable surface, and it supported Microsoft Precision touchpad drivers (which is interestingly listed as an pick in Dell's spec sheet). I found it to provide precise and reliable support for Windows 10's full suite of multitouch gestures. The brandish is bear upon-enabled, as with all 2-in-1s, and it supports Dell's Agile Pen. The pen is optional and wasn't included in my review unit; it should actually be included at this price point.
Windows 10 Hello back up is provided by a fingerprint reader embedded in the power button, just like on Dell'southward latest XPS machines. Information technology worked well, with just a press of the power button both waking up the laptop and logging yous in. For privacy, there'south a physical shutter that slides over the webcam.

Bombardment life
Y'all tin can cull either a 41 watt-hour or a 54 watt-60 minutes bombardment for the Inspiron 14 ii-in-1, and my review unit was equipped with the latter. That'south a decent amount of ability for a 14-inch laptop with a Total HD brandish, and I expected proficient if not bang-up bombardment life.
What I got was impressive. In our web-browsing test, the Inspiron 14 2-in-i lasted for about thirteen hours, a very potent score that blew away the Asus VivoBook Flip xiv's nine hours and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i's paltry 7.25 hours. In our video examination that loops a local Total Hd Avengers trailer, the Inspiron 14 ii-in-one made information technology to sixteen hours, another stiff score compared to the VivoBook Flip 14's 12 hours and the IdeaPad Flex 5i's xi.v hours. Unfortunately, the Inspiron 14 ii-in-1 wouldn't complete the PCMark 10 Applications or Gaming battery tests, and so I tin't report those results.
Overall, battery life was a existent strength of the Inspiron xiv 2-in-1. It volition get y'all through a full mean solar day'due south work and and so some, letting you do some Netflix bingeing in the evening earlier plugging in.
Our have
The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is a difficult laptop to charge per unit. It'southward well-congenital and looks proficient, and it provides fantabulous operation and long battery life. Those are good enough to warrant the $1,000 toll, just barely. Withal, the display is a letdown, and that creates a dilemma.
If your productivity workflow is enervating and you don't care about broad colors, so the Inspiron fourteen 2-in-1 will run across your needs in an exemplary manner. The trouble is, you lot tin can spend the aforementioned or less coin and detect laptops with similar performance and better displays. I'll mention at least ane in the following department. I'll recommend that Inspiron 14 two-in-1, only with some serious qualifications.
Are at that place whatever alternatives?
The Asus ZenBook xiii OLED UM325UA is one laptop that offers an outstanding brandish to go with superior operation and battery life. It's not a 2-in-1, but it's well-nigh the aforementioned cost for a color-accurate OLED display, a faster AMD Ryzen 7 5800U CPU, and a 1TB PCIe SSD.
The Asus VivoBook Flex fourteen is almost as fast as the Inspiron 14 ii-in-1 and has a like display, just it'southward $300 less. Its build quality isn't quite every bit proficient and it has one-half the RAM and storage, but if you're looking to save some money, merely still take a well-performing productivity workhorse, and so the VivoBook is a practiced choice.
How long will information technology final?
The Inspiron fourteen 2-in-1 is built well enough that you should look years of productive service. The same goes with its components, which are modernistic enough to keep Windows ten (and Windows xi) running for quite some time. (Information technology's likewise it lacks Thunderbolt iv, though.) The one-year warranty is disappointing, every bit usual, but the industry standard.
Should you buy it?
Aye. The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is fast and ability-efficient, but the display's poor effulgence and colors limit its usefulness for creators. If you don't intendance well-nigh wide colors, then information technology works well as a productivity auto without any artistic aspirations.
